Spinal manipulation and joint mobilisation in Toronto
Hands-on joint work, including spinal manipulation as a rostered practitioner.
Overview
Graded joint mobilisation and, where appropriate, spinal manipulation to ease pain and restore movement in the short term, so that the exercise programme is easier to do.
I am on the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario roster authorised to perform spinal manipulation.
What is spinal manipulation and joint mobilisation?
Joint mobilisation is a graded, rhythmic movement of a joint, from gentle to firm, within or at the end of its range. Spinal manipulation is a small, quick, controlled movement (sometimes called an adjustment) that may produce a click or pop.
How does spinal manipulation and joint mobilisation work?
Both mainly work through the nervous system, reducing pain and muscle guarding in the short term so that the area moves more comfortably. The click is a release of gas in the joint; it is not a bone going back into place, and the treatment does not need a click to help.
How I use spinal manipulation and joint mobilisation in treatment
Manual therapy opens a window: a period of less pain and easier movement that we use for exercise. I do not promise to realign anything, and I will not make you dependent on regular adjustments. I am on the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario’s roster of physiotherapists authorised to perform spinal manipulation.
What happens in a session?
After the assessment and your consent, I use mobilisation, manipulation or both, check how the movement has changed, and move on to the exercises that keep the gain.
Who can spinal manipulation and joint mobilisation help?
Neck pain, mid and low back pain, stiff joints, headaches from the neck, and stiffness after injury or surgery.
Is spinal manipulation and joint mobilisation safe, and what should I expect afterwards?
You are screened before any manipulation for reasons not to use it. Mild soreness for a day is possible. Very rarely, neck manipulation has been linked to injury of an artery in the neck, which is why I screen first and why neck manipulation is always optional. You can always choose mobilisation or another approach instead.
Every plan starts with a full assessment, so the treatment fits what is actually driving your problem. Joint mobilisation and spinal manipulation is one tool within that plan, not the whole plan.

Before you book
Do I need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist in Ontario?
No. In Ontario you can book directly with a registered physiotherapist, no referral needed. Some extended health plans, and motor vehicle or workplace injury claims, have their own requirements, so it is worth checking your plan before your first visit.
Is physiotherapy covered by OHIP?
OHIP only covers physiotherapy for certain eligible groups at OHIP-funded clinics. Appointments with me are private, not billed to OHIP. Most extended health benefit plans cover registered physiotherapy, and you receive a receipt after every visit to submit to your plan.
Can my appointment be billed directly to my insurance?
Direct billing depends on the clinic and on your insurer. Ask when you book and the clinic will confirm whether they can bill your plan directly.
